Too Many Keys Might Actually Ruin the Locks They Operate:

Have you ever seen one of those huge key rings with all those keys, bottle openers and "stuff" hanging from the ring? While it may look impressive, chances are, when you have keys hanging in a lock the weight may be damaging the lock.

This problem is common with auto ignitions. The weight of your keys can wear down the tumblers and could cause an expensive failure. The best solution is to use a pull apart key ring or leave a few of the "extras" at home!

Use a Simple System to Keep Track of Who Can Get into What:

The easiest way to keep track of who can get into what, is to use a two card key control system. One card lists each door, what key fits it and who has the keys. The second card lists each employee and what keys they hold. This way if anyone ever leaves the company you know what keys you should get back or if anything mysterious disappears, you will know who has access to the area in question.

Don't Mix Your Lubricants:

For years many lock manufacturers used dry graphite as their lubrication of choice. Most locksmiths, understanding the mechanical function of the springs and pins in a lock, followed this lead. However, with the popularity of aerosols, many people started spraying a variety of lubricants into their locks. Problems arise when you mix graphite with oil-based lubricants.

This combination results in a thick substance or "goo", prone to trap dirt and grime which can cause the lock to stop working. To avoid this messy problem always use the same lubricant as used previously or completely flush the lock. This way you will replace all the existing lubricant.

Security Tips:
  • Secure all entry doors with 1" deadbolts.

  • Trim shrubs so entry doors can be seen from the street.

  • Install light timers for interior lamps.

  • Advise a neighbor to remove newspapers and pick-up mail when you're on vacation.

  • Install exterior lights shining on doors and windows.

  • Keep all gates and fences with good quality padlocks.

  • Prepare master bedroom for emergency use by installing a solid wood door with a good lock.

  • Use light timers while on vacation.

  • Have all emergency phone numbers posted by phone.

  • Install a wide angle door viewer on all exterior doors.
